Shortcuts! FanFic, Ouranos

From The Archives of Dr. Albertus Menashe

Excerpt from Expedition Letters, Dated 24/2/57 -

Gentlemen, I have done it. I have found proof, and it is greater than any I had ever suspected possible. A living creature, gentlemen! Living, breathing proof that our hypothesis was not some wild goose chase! This unique specimen must, by its very existence, redefine the whole meaning of cryptozoology. This is our moment of glory, fellows. We shall be heard!

My only quandary in this triumph is its unfortunate circumstance, which throws off our timing significantly. Despite all my numerous efforts, only this lone example of our work has been found - and it seems unwell. This would explain why we were able to capture it so easily, but... I fear we may lose the creature to its injury if we attempt to transport it now. The repercussions of such a setback would be simply unacceptable, given the efforts it has taken to obtain this single specimen. I thus shall remain encamped here for a brief period longer, in order to secure its health for transportation, though the delay should not stretch more than a week or so. Like all creatures, this one follows the basic rules of biology - it should be no great or lengthy task to bring it back to a functional constitution. In the meantime, this will present me the opportunity to study its physical structure in further depth. I must state now, it seems nearly a marvel in evolutionary development...

Personal Journal Entry, Dated 15/5/57 -

They cannot be allowed to take her, the fools! They are as blind as the academy heads, seeing only "reputation" and "prestige" dancing over their true vision - hiding the obvious from their minds! There are more. More species, more races, though rare and hiding from our search. And I can see why - my "colleagues" have shown that quite well indeed. They want a medal, a name in the history books... not discovery, but fame! And they'd destroy everything to see it.

They'd destroy her. They'd take Amrita's life for their selfish aims, spreading her across some dissection table to see exactly what makes her live... failing to understand that the real point is that she does! She is a sentient being! What right have they to murder her for their twisted "discovery"? What higher authority permits them to silence her beautiful voice, to strike her very spirit off the record of existence in order to present her as just another beast? She has told me of her life, her loneliness, her forced isolation from the others in her plight... they call me deluded, insane even, and yet they would destroy this noble heart rather than set her free?

The others! They know of them! Oh, curse my lack of understanding in these many months. They will come for them, just as they come for my love! They will seek them out, to capture them... pry them apart just to name an organ or get on that blasted Nobel stage! Damn them, will they destroy all this world's wonders just to see how they function - leaving them "knowing" only that they murdered the very things they fought all authority to discover?

...No, no they won't. I will not, can not permit it. I must protect Amrita, I must protect the others... this is my final entry. You monsters in the Institute can write this all off as hallucination, but the photos I sent prove otherwise. The samples in your hands and on my desk will tell you all you need to know about the "beast" you seek's existence, and you can live out your days knowing full well that your heedless lust for the destruction of your very subjects cost you that prize. And, God willing, every other one as well. I will find them. She will help me. I will keep them secret, I will protect them, and I will make sure the world learns they are more than just monsters to be fought, feared, or dissected. I will make you see! They are more beautiful than you can possibly imagine.

Dr. Menagerie

The Gallery Hall

Within these rooms reside creatures mankind refuses to recognize as real. They are called fantasies, monsters, or simply the products of an unstable mind. But we know better, don't we?

Chronicles - Tales by, or about, our facility's long-term guests.

Collected Works - Stories from elsewhere, which contain amazingly-similar references to the denizens of our grand hall. Perhaps these are clues to other hidden races, or a revised account of other individuals with the same goal as our own? Only time can tell.

  • It's Always Time - An experiment in forbidden desires, reluctantly entered, with quite interesting results... though certainly not the ones expected.

The Study

This pleasant little chamber holds all our various reference works. This is a house of learning, after all - even if it is a bit unusual in its chosen subjects.

Lectures - Our small, yet growing, library of manuals and treatises on the functional natures of the hidden races - how they live, love, feed and reproduce.

  • Gelafems - Also known as "slime" or "goo" girls, these beautiful liquid ladies are rare and magnificent specimens... if you can find one to call your own, anyways.
  • Naga - Half snake, half human, these unusual beings are quintessentially passionate - fiery in love and anger, but quite literally breathtaking in any aspect they might show.

Other Works - The personal library and gathered words of our founder, collected in the hope of spreading his vision to the greater populations of mankind.

  • Profile - Who is Dr. Menagerie? The world thinks him dead or insane - but he is truly neither...
  • Maps to Elsewhere - In the words of the great ancestral navigators, "hic sunt dracones." These charts purport to guide travellers to worlds beyond the understanding, and certainly the beliefs, of nearly all humanity. But that does not mean they are necessarily false... not at all.
